Ask A Question

It's frustrating when you know all the answers,
But nobody bothers to ask you the questions.

***************************

Do you have a question? Something you've wondered about or a topic you'd like to see covered in this blog? Post it in the comments today! If I can't answer it, I will do my best to find someone who can. Don't be shy. The only dumb question is the one not asked!

Peace,

Just a touch of Turquoise

Purple collage

Sometimes a little is just enough.  We've been discussing how turquoise is the hot decorating color for 2010.  In this final post on the subject I'd like to introduce a wonderful collage that offers just a hint of turquoise.  "Purple Collage" measures 14" wide x 33" long and can be displayed framed or unframed.  it is a delicious mix of 3-D butterflies, beads, and tribal warrior among a wandering vine.  It is a visual delight.  I hope you have enjoyed this turquoise journey.  Happy designing!

New Work: Inspired by books

fiber ornament purple

purple metalic ornament fiber

I enjoyed a semester worth of inspiration this fall.  My teenaged son was taking a paper art class at his high school. They made a delicious array of books, which I got to see when I was invited to visit by his teacher.  It was the end of the semester and their final exam projects were displayed in the back of the room.  So many sizes, shapes, colors and techniques were presented.  It was so much fun to examine each one to figure out how it opened.  What a joy to carefully turn the pages and read each one.  It inspired me to try my hand at some books. (As you know, my primary medium is fabric.)  I enjoyed the process so much;  I decided to translate the paper concepts into fabric.  This lead to a stamp covered fabric envelope complete with an inspirational quilted work inside, a hexagon lidded bowl filled with beaded three-dimensional dragonflies, and a series of pyramidal amulet holders.  It was so much fun to explore these new areas/processes.  I look forward to my next adventure.

A Poem by Alice Shapiro (guest Blogger)

Calming

A fast walk,
mad lungs spitting air.
Then rest, leaning
on an oak facade
of a vacant shop.
Sunday for some
is church, then
washday. Others,
stay-in-bed,
read-the-paper day.
Where are the sane?
I walk it off, then
Van Gogh ignites
my basement gallery.
Asperity melts into
a single brushstroke.

DVD helps kids with autism recognize emotions

ASSOCIATED PRESS
Monday, January 26, 2009

LONDON — It wasn't until Jude met Jenny that the 3-year-old autistic boy understood what happy people look like.

Jenny, a green trolley car with a human face, had a furrowed brow when her wheel buckled and she got stuck on a track. But after being rescued by friends, she smiled broadly - and that's when something clicked for little Jude Baines.

"It was revelatory," his mother, Caron Freeborn, told Associated Press Television News in Cambridge, England. Before watching the video, Jude didn't understand what emotions were and never noticed the expressions on people's faces, even those of his parents or younger brother.

Jenny's adventures are part of a DVD for autistic children released this month in the United States called "The Transporters."

The DVD teaches autistic children how to recognize emotions such as happiness, and sadness through the exploits of a train, a ferry and a cable car....

"Art can be an important part of education for special needs students. It provides them with a hands-on way to express themselves and experience the joy of completing projects that are fun to do. Often, special needs students have a harder time experiencing success with hands-on activities, due to motor, visual, and tactile impairments. With art projects, however, all students can succeed.

It's important that teachers have patience when helping special needs students with art projects. Reacting with impatience may cause the special needs child undue anxiety and make the task far less pleasurable. Teachers should make the point of the art activity the actual process rather than the finished result. Letting the child know that his/her artwork is special and unique throughout the process can help him/her become more confident...."

29 gifts in 29 days

I just read about this really neat movement started by Cami Walker.  I feel it is so important to give of ourselves.  It benefits the world and also the giver.  Cami writes: "Why? Because to see the world change, we have to do something to change the world. Plus, the best way to attract abundance into your life is to be in a perpetual state of giving and gratitude. Be an important part of the global giving movement that inspires more generosity on our planet. "  Check out her web site: www.29gifts.org.  Let me know what you think.

My Passion

I wrote this article for EVA mag. It appeared in the Feb edition. (See picture)

Webster defines passion as intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction; a strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept. For me, passion is the juice that flows through me and energizes me to accomplish great things. I am an accomplished studio fiber artist and teaching artist. People tell me that I have the energy of 3 people. I am passionate about many things in life. I would like to tell you about one of them.

My Teaching

One of the things that I am most passionate about is the empowerment of people with disabilities through art. I am a professional fiber artist with a background in occupational therapy. I believe that the arts encourage innovation and self-expression by opening boundless opportunities, creating meaning from chaos, nurturing the spirit and making the seemingly impossible possible. By engaging in visual arts, the learner is empowered to transform, creating confidence and self-esteem and developing intellectual skills. The arts inspire, encourage and connect us to both ourselves and the world around us. The arts awaken the individual to believe and follow one’s dreams. Participating in visual arts changes the lives of my special needs students.

I actively pursue this passion in two ways. First, I teach groups of adults with cognitive challenges throughout greater Knoxville. We meet every other week to create various art projects. These projects are specifically designed to target and develop a variety of skills. The participants really enjoy the opportunity to interact with each other and learn something new. The finished projects fall into two categories. Half the projects are for personal use by the class participants. The rest of the projects are made for giving. Some projects go to family and friends. Others support the community, like nursing homes, the Humane Society, and U.S. soldiers abroad. I feel it is very important for everyone to give back to the community in which they live. I believe everyone has something of value to offer others regardless of ability. And, as I teach my students, when giving to others you get back tenfold.

I also work as an artist-in-residence in special education classrooms throughout the area. When I am in the special education classroom, I design projects that support and enhance both academic and IEP (Individual Education Plan) goals. Besides developing such personal areas as coordination, sequencing, attention span, and sensory integration, the students work on traditional subjects such as math, English, geography and history though art. I have seen many miracles over the years. These include withdrawn and communication-challenged children lighting up and shining with excitement. I’ve seen attention span, communication skills, and self esteem increase exponentially. I’ve also seen students who were frustrated by an academic concept, suddenly experience the joy of comprehension. I enjoy the added benefit of enlightening teachers and parents to the wonderful creative skills that the students have. Many times I have heard, “I had no idea my child was capable of creating something as wonderful as this. I am so proud.” It is that kind of feedback that fuels my passion for this engaging work

If your organization would like to see more pictures and hear uplifting stories of the wonderful results occurring in art education and/or help sponsor this work in the community, please e-mail me re: your interest.

This little gem uses jewel-toned hand dyed fabrics. I wanted to experiment with using words in my work. Words are so powerful and the words I chose: "Vibrant", "Spirited", "Yes"...are empowering and uplifting. Add some beads and what's not to love!

Guest Blogger: Mel Edwards

For me, art is not an optional choice, it is essential to my personal truth. To deny my creativity is to state that who and what I am is not valued in the world. When I uphold my art, I am validating myself, even when others do not see or hear my creations.

I've had the honor of interviewing nearly 100 artist in the last seven months and my statements above resonate with the stories each of them has shared with me. I believe we're all creators and all have something to share with the world. Oh sure, you'll meet someone who says, "I don't have a creative bone in my body," but they're parents, or whip of dinner every night, or design new projects for their jobs. Just because it isn't art doesn't mean it is a "less than" creation.

I find that art, performance, literary, fine or crafts, supports expression of your deepest values and emotional states. The textures, colors, terminology and verve that shows in your work all are miniature pictures of your soul, much like the mosaic murals and puzzles that are popular in the art world today. Do yourself a favor, let you spirit show, and even if you feel you're not ready to share it with the world, you'll be all the better for it because today you've proven to yourself you're valuable and so are the expressions of your soul

Attended Lecture by Arun Gandhi

I had the extreme pleasure of attanding a lecture given by Arun Gandhi at Pellissippi State Community College on Tuesday. Arun is the grandson of Mahatma Gandi. He discussed methods of obtaining solutions through non-violence. It was very interesting to hear concrete exapmles of how to put non-violence into practice. Especially how one must carry the burden of change on one's self to serve as an example. I feel I was lead to attend this lecture and I trust you were lead to this site/posting. I will be posting videos of A. Gandhi over the next few weeks. Peace to you!

Guest Blog by Linda Pucci, PhD.

Use Art to Find Solutions and Get Unstuck

By Linda Pucci, Ph.D.

Feeling stuck? Try grabbing your kid's crayons and draw your way to a solution!

As a psychologist and life coach, I often work with people who are feeling stuck. Their usual right-brained, verbally-based approach to problem solving hasn't worked. They go back and forth between alternatives, and around and around in circles trying to figure out how to fix their problem.

That's when I often encourage them to turn to art to find the solution. Although consciously they are stuck, unconsciously they have the resources to solve their challenge. But because our unconscious mind is highly symbolic, to access it we have to speak that language.

Art—whether it is drawing, painting, doodling, sculpting, collages or fabric art—provides a way to unleash your unconscious mind and find solutions.

Sometimes I'll ask someone to depict their problem through artwork. I'll ask them to capture their problem's shape or color. Usually after some initial hesitation, and getting beyond concerns about "artistic ability," they are able to easily do it. Even without their realizing it, they are symbolically capturing all the things that problem represents to them.

I may then ask them to depict what things will be like when the problem is solved, and again, they capture their understanding of the solution through their artistic representation. We can then begin to look at the symbols and figure out what resources to use to shift it.

Sometimes I'll ask them to find a resource symbol and create it artistically. The symbol created is multi-leveled and always has intense personal meaning. Their artistic rendering often becomes a powerful ongoing symbol for them in their lives, and many times people will frame their drawing, or display this highly meaningful artwork as an ongoing reminder of this resource.

The symbolic nature of artwork means that it is a visual (and sometimes kinesthetic) image that captures all the nuances that often can't be captured in words. The artwork and the process of creating it allow them to design solutions, and to see their challenge differently. They can now begin to change their approach and get unstuck.

Linda Pucci, Ph.D. is a psychologist and life coach at Inner Resource Center, LLC in Maryville, TN. She has 30 years of experience helping people get unstuck and find solutions they had not thought possible using her solution focused approach. "Inspire your Heart with Art" Day

In honor of "Inspire your Heart with Art" Day, I present one of my newer works: "Abundance".  This piece uses a gourd as a foundation.  Mounds of fibers in assorted textures and colors spill forth from the mouth of the gourd.  Nestled in the fibers are assorted crystals.  The movement and energy flow like liquid.  Abundance!

Bailey Earith is a professional fiber artist. Her blog contains so many interesting posts and snippets of information that it truly resonated with my creative soul. My Journey: How I got where I am (because you asked)

Blog reader TexasRed requested this info (see 1/15/09 post).

My training is in Occupational Therapy, hence my love for working with people with disabilities.  I fell in love with fabric after dabbling in a variety of art forms over the years.  After deciding to become a professional artist, I worked as a free-lance designer, writing for numerous magazine and book publishers and working with product manufacturers.  (You can see a complete list on my web site "about me" page www.BaileyFiberArt.com). I eventually grew to where I am now, working in my studio creating major works and empowering people with disabilities through art.I love the play of textures and colors found in nature. I am influenced by African, Asian, & Tibetan cultures. Many of my pieces are mandalas (energy circles).I have been making wall hangings since the beginning of my career. More recently, I have been enjoying the engineering challenge of creating 3-dimentional vessels.

My Philosophy:

I am committed to bringing peace to the world through art. The world is full of turmoil, anger, and strife.  These negative energies are very draining and destructive.  It is my mission to combat these negative forces with positive energy.  Each of my works is created in a peace-filled, uplifting, positive, joyful environment.  This inspiring energy becomes infused into the art piece.  Those who view the finished art, experience a sense of joy and serenity.  They then carry that positive energy out into the world where it is multiplied.

Brain Dance

I have started using BrainDance as a warm-up in my special ed classes before beginning work on our visual art project. The theories are consistent with those I learned in my Occupational Therapy training. I plan to teach some classes on the use of BrainDance. Follow this blog for updates. Please pass this post along to those who may be interested in this information.

The BRAINDANCE aids in creating stimulus to the brain to enhance
learning. Howard Gardner's work with multiple Intelligences, supports the theories of dance educators, that specific movement patterns can offer entry points into the learning process.
The BRAINDANCE is based on the latest in brain and learning research.
This movement sequence "explores the developmental movement patterns
human beings move thorough in the first year of life to wire the central
nervous system so the brain can operate fully, thus creating the
important mind-body connection needed for all learning. These student-centered experiences present developmentally appropriate material for all ages and levels of movement training. With four million children labeled ADHD and nearly 80% of all Americans that could be suffering with other learning challenges including loss of focus, disruptive behavior, erratic and unbalanced motor skills, sleep
disorders, stress, depression, and other medical ailments, the BrainDance can help to address these concerns regarding the teaching-learning process.

Emu

Title: Emu

My friend Joyce raises Emus in Wisconsin.  She challenged me to create a piece using naturally molted feathers from her birds.  I found 2 African prints and sewed them alternating the right and reverse sides, framed them in black, then applied the Emu feathers.

Engaging in Creativity Increases Longevity

Great News!  I will live forever!

"...There's evidence that their (creative) professions, more than any particular lifestyle choice, may have contributed to their longevity. "The very act of engaging one's mind in creative ways directly affects health," says Dr. Gene Cohen, director of the Center on Aging, Health & Humanities at George Washington University. In 2001, Cohen undertook a study of 150 adults ages 65 to 100 to examine the effects of various pursuits on their well-being. The control group was engaged in noncreative community activities and the other group participated in community-based art programs. After one year, Cohen found that the group engaged in creative activities, such as painting or singing in a choir, had started fewer new medications, experienced fewer falls and made fewer doctor's visits than the control group. "Anything that stimulates the brain, reduces stress, and promotes a more balanced emotional response will trigger positive changes in the body," he says..."

Cymatics: the Mandalas of Sound

"Welcome. I'd like to introduce you to the Great, Great, Great Grandmother Goddess of all Mandalas. It is what science calls "Cymatics". It is the study of sound wave vibration and it's affects on physical matter.
In Cymatics, we have two forces at work. We have matter and we have energy/sound vibration.

The photographs above are examples of many experiments of sound vibrational frequencies upon different types of matter, which could be sand, liquid, gel or any number of different powdered substances. Each wave frequency creates another unique pattern in the matter. When the frequency is turned off, the matter falls out of pattern into chaos. You can read a little bit about the history of Cymatics here or in the side bar under "Mandala Sites".

Prepare for your mind to be blown away :-)

There are questions that come to my mind... If we could discover the vibrational frequency of a plant, animal, person, thing, planet...could we recreate it? Could we discover the vibration of health, of peace, of joy?"
