Three Knoxville area art groups collaborate to present free performance

Date: October 23rd at 1:30 pm

Where: On the Krutch Park Extension lawn on Gay street across from the Regal cinema.

Artists involved: Momentum Dance Lab with Bailey Fiber Art and Tin Soldiers Productions

What: "Paint in Motion" improvisational multimedia event

Momentum Dance Lab, Bailey Fiber Art, and Tin Soldiers Productions are collaborating to present a free multimedia event.

On Saturday, October 23rd at 1:30 pm on the Krutch Park Extension lawn (on Gay street across from the Regal cinema), members of Momentum Dance Lab will present a moving painting project where dancers will paint fabric with their improvisational movement. The painted fabrics are based on color palettes designed by fiber artist, Bailey Earith. Videographer, Tin Soldiers Productions, will be on hand to film the performance. The public is invited to attend this free, community arts event.

After this public event, Bailey Earith will manipulate the painted fabrics in her Farragut studio to create a piece of 3-D wall art. Tin Soldiers Productions will document this process and edit the footage from Krutch Park and Bailey Fiber Art Studio into an art film. This project will culminate in a multi-media performance piece at Momentum Dance Lab’s annual show, “Art Moves” which will be presented at the KMA on March 12th and 13th, 2011.

Momentum Dance Lab strives for excellence in dance through artistic exploration, professional training and original performances. MDL offers opportunities in most aspects of dance production and arts administration, while creating innovative outreach programs to enhance our community. www.momentumdancelab.com

Free Soothing Audio Sounds From NatureSounds

If you’re breathing, there is probably stress in your life from time to time. One of the ways to get back on track is to listen to something soothing. Some people like white noise or certain music, but if the sounds of nature work best for you here are a few free downloads of nature sounds to help you out. Each is 60 minutes long so in my book, it’s well worth giving your email address so they can send you a download link. Give the recordings a try and see what you think.

Flag Quilt Supports US Troops in Iraq

As you may know, I have taken an interest in supporting the charitable organization http://www.BlessingOurTroops.com. They are a grassroots effort to provide care packages to US troops in Iraq. I feel this is in alignment with my mission of peace. Towards that end, I have designed this cute flag quilt. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this quilt will go toward this organization. Follow-up to Yesterday's post

Did you get a chance to read yesterday's post about creative ideas for getting unstuck?  I know it was long , but I think well worth it.

I always use the 'give up temporarily' method.  When I'm at a loss for a solution, I head to the pool and swim laps.  After about 20 minutes, all the creative solutions I need become very clear.  I have used this tool successfully for years!

Peace, Bailey

Feeling Stuck? Try This

feeling-stuck

If you’re involved in any kind of creative work, you and inertia are probably well acquainted.

I wish I were an exception, but no—inertia and I are mortal enemies. Every day I get up and fight a battle against that beast. Sometimes I win; sometimes I lose.

Sometimes we get “stuck” in something and have a hard time figuring out what to do next. If you’re feeling stuck, try one or more of these ideas.

Initiate instead of responding. Move the ball forward. Somehow, do something to advance the cause. Review existing projects and find one single action you can do to keep things moving along. If that doesn’t work, start something new.

Don’t be insane. Remember Einstein’s definition of insanity: “Doing the same things over and over while expecting different results.” For different results, try something new. Ironic, isn’t it? Inertia loves doing the same things over and again.

Continually question the status quo. Are things good enough? No? Then see the previous idea. Could they be better? Change it up! Do something completely different.

Carry a notebook everywhere you go. One of the most important principles of GTD as I practice it is, “Write everything down.” I don’t actually write long blog posts and manuscripts when I’m constantly on the go—I find it hard to concentrate in short bursts of a few minutes. But I do outline, and I do write everything down.

Give up. (Temporarily.) Step away, purposefully. Take a meaningful break. Think about what really needs to be done, then step back and do it.

Put on the running shoes. There’s an old saying about running and motivation: “50% of running is putting on your shoes and getting out the door.” I’m not sure it’s a full 50%, but hey, it’s something. In other words, resistance prevents us from getting started. Once we’re underway, it’s a lot easier.

If nothing else, help someone. I wrote about this during the Annual Review and a lot of you liked it: if you get up in the morning and can’t think of anything to do, spend your time helping someone. What that looks like depends on who you are and what you do. It sure beats reading the online news over and over while waiting for emails to arrive.

Do something that creates a deliverable or outcome. Productive online tasks include:

  • Uploading photos to Flickr

  • Writing a recommendation for someone on LinkedIn

  • Leaving comments (non self-promotional ones) on someone’s blog

  • Listing something for sale on eBay

  • Writing a note to your newsletter

  • And so on… if those don’t apply to you, think about what does.

Apply for a scholarship, competition, or contest. Someone has to win all of those awards. The old Wayne Gretzky advice applies here: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Therefore, take shots.

When considering different opportunities, don’t wait too long to decide. Should you learn Spanish or Chinese? Well, if you think about it for a year, you’ll have lost a year’s worth of learning. If you really can’t decide between two options, you can either a) flip a coin, or b) find a way to do both. Better to start, then change later if you want.

Set a $100 hour. I’m grateful to Barbara Winter, one of our group and a fabulous author with her own tribe, for this concept. When you set a $100 hour, you spend as long as you need (up to an hour) brainstorming different ways to make $100.

Yes, I know that life is not all about making money, but if you’re an entrepreneur or otherwise self-employed, you have the imperative to bring in the funds. Also, once you figure out how to make $100 from a new source, you can probably increase the amount with less effort. It’s a fun exercise—learn more here.

***

Just as we all fight inertia in some form or another, we all get stuck. When it happens, the choice is to waste a workday (or more), or find a way out. Let’s not waste any time. Let’s get out of being stuck!

The Art of Creating a Commission: Part 7

The finished piece was mounted on acid-free mat board and framed in a wood frame using spacer bars and glare free glass.  The project was finished on time.  The class was very pleased when they came to the studio to pick up the finished piece.  They presented it later that week to the University of Tennessee School of business as part of the graduation ceremonies.

The Art of Creating a Commission: Part 6

The quilted piece was squared up.  I designed a custom edge by creating an original braid trim.  At this stage, the surgical instruments were attached.

Throughout the process the physicians were sent photo updates of the project for their approval.

The Art of Creating a Commission: Part 5

A quilt top was layered with a batting and backing.  It was then embellished with decorative yarns and repeats of the line graph motif.  French knots were hand-embroidered throughout the piece for interest and added texture.  Smiley faces were beaded with black seed beads.

The Art of Creating a Commission: Part 3

I disassembled the palm pilot and opted to use the keyboard and stylus in the finished piece.  I created several business related motifs including a pie chart and line graph.

I chose which pictures I would use, sized them, and printed them out onto fabric.  I cut down the scrubs into a series of patches and emblems.

The Art of Creating a Commission

Over the next few posts I will describe a commission that I completed recently.  I will explore the process of designing and creating the piece. Enjoy.

Part one

I was commissioned by the PE MBA (physicians’ executive Masters of business administration) class of 2009 to create a fiber art piece that would be given to the University of Tennessee Department of business as a class gift.  This is a group of 37 physicians from around the country, who met every Saturday via teleconference over a period of one year to complete their MBA.

“We’re a fun group, and we’d like this piece to represent who we are as physicians, as well as our experiences in the PEMBA program”, they told me.

The group sent me a list of catch phrases from the course, as well as medical photos, hospital scrubs, surgical instruments, and a broken palm pilot.    We agreed on a puzzle type design concept.    We also agreed on a size, price, and deadline.

What is Passion?

Here is a wonderful article about passion. http://www.passionsandpossibilities.com/2010/01/

My definition? (as quoted in the article) "What makes you smile; what gives you energy; what gives you bounce in your step; what gets you out of bed in the morning; what makes you miserable if you don’t have it.” Bailey Earith, founder of Bailey Fiber Art Studio (www.baileyfiberart.com)

Llama: From Photo to Fabric

Llama art quilt

This piece is a new work fresh from the studio!  It measures 9.5" x 11"  It is made with had-dyed fabrics.  I met this cutie on a llama trek I took this fall.  I felt she had to be immortalized in fabric.  I think it looks just like the original photo, don't you?
